increasing amount of dynamic content on home pageWe have a mostly static long form home page that describes our product's features, comparison chart, demo, etc. We have a couple of dynamic block areas that show a random selection of product thumbnails, plus another one for some recent blog headlines. We're considering updating our home page so that the blog is featured more prominently, showing post excerpts instead of just headlines, thus increasing the amount of content on our home page that is regularly updated. From a purely SEO perspective, how much impact would this have? Any best practices on how much content to show?

increasing amount of dynamic content on home pageThis shouldn't have a big impact, but if you observe anything, my experience is that it's universally positive. Basically, by showing more content on the home page, you're inviting Googlebot (and the other engines) to crawl more frequently, because the material is updated more frequently. You're also sending lots of good link juice from your home page, which is typically well linked-to and powerful, down to lower level pages like the blog, which can have a positive impact on indexing and inclusion speed.
We almost always recommend having dynamic blocks on the home page or high level category pages for precisely this reason, so go for it!
