The Uninvited
The movie begins with a young girl (Emily Browning) and a boy lying on the beach at a party. After he tells her he loves her and he "has a condom," she gets up to leave. As she goes, her sister Alex (Arielle Kebbel) asks if everything is alright. On her way through the woods to her house, Anna encounters several white garbage bags. When she goes to open them, the corpse of a red-headed girl falls out. As Anna recoils, the girl's head snaps around and she speaks. Anna runs home. She then hears the bell that her mother, who is terminally ill, rings when she needs something. Anna is concerned because her mother is not supposed to be alone. However, when she goes up to her house, the boathouse her mother is in explodes in flames. It is then revealed that this is a dream that Anna is having.
She has been in a mental hospital since the death of her mother ten months earlier, but her psychiatrist believes she is ready to leave. He tells her to "finish what she started." As Anna packs, another patient comes in asking Anna who she will tell her stories to now that Anna is leaving. Anna's father takes her home, where she is joyfully reunited with her sister, who is upset when she hears that Anna did not receive any of the letters Alex wrote. Alex confronts her father, who ignores her. Anna is also reunited with Rachel, her mother's former nurse who is now dating Anna's father. Both Anna and Alex are suspicious of her. That night Anna has a nightmare of a hand crawling up her bed, but her sister comes in to comfort her. They discuss their feelings on Rachel.
The next day Anna meets with her former boyfriend Matt, who tells Anna he knows what really happened the night of the fire. However, Rachel comes before he can say any more and sends him away. That night Anna and Alex wonder if the fire that killed their mother was not an accident. The next day Anna and Rachel go into town so Anna can talk to Matt while Alex searches through Rachel's belongings. Rachel discusses her former patients with Anna, telling her that they only way she got through it was by reminding herself that the people she was caring for would be dead soon. She also showed Anna her pearls, saying they were a gift from one of her patients. Anna sees the little girl from her dream along with two little boys, but in a moment they are gone.
When Anna meets up with Matt, he tells her he will meet her at "the rock" that night to tell her what he saw. However he does not come. later that night he comes in her window and they begin kissing, but she realizes his back is broken and his torso begins to slump over. He grabs her arms as she backs away, she shakes off his grasp, walks out the door, then wakes up to find it was all only a dream. Later that day they find Matt's body in the water with his back broken. Anna shows Alex the bruises on her arms where he grabbed her in the dream, saying she's not crazy.
Anna and Alex do research and learn that Rachel lied about her name. Anna confronts Rachel, who becomes angry and tells Anna that if she says anything Rachel will make sure she goes back to the mental hospital. That night Rachel has a dinner party that Anna inadvertently ruins after the red-haired girl comes out from under the stove, telling Anna that "she's next." Anna's father leaves on the day of Matt's funeral. While at the funeral the ghosts of the children lead Anna to their graves so she can learn their names. She does a search on the names, learning that the children were killed by their former nanny (it is implied she also kills their mother). In a picture Anna sees the mother wearing Rachel's pearls. Alex and Anna try to get to the pearls. A struggle ensues between Anna and Rachel, but Anna manages to get the pearls. When she goes upstairs to check if Alex is okay she finds that Rachel has heavily drugged her with the needles Anna and Alex found earlier, she must leave Alex behind. Anna then gets Rachel's car keys and gets in the car and starts driving but the car stalls for some reason and Rachel catches up to her only to be dragged to the ground once Anna manages to start the car again and drive off.
At the police station Anna explains everything, begging the police officer to hurry because Alex is still at the house. He leaves and while he is gone Anna falls asleep and dreams she sees her mother but as she gets closer the dream ends replacing her mother with Rachel, who sedates Anna and takes her back to the house where Anna suspects Rachel will kill her. As Rachel prepares to dress Anna in her pajamas Anna reaches for a knife but Rachel stops her, Alex sneaks up behind Rachel and the screen goes black as Anna slips out of consciousness. When Anna wakes up she follows a trail of blood outside to the dumpster where Rachel's body is lying in (what appears to be) a black trash bag. Alex appears, covered in blood, telling Anna she did what she had to. Anna's father arrives shortly after, but when Anna tries to explain what happened her father tells her Alex is dead and asks her what she has done.
It is revealed that Anna is the one covered in blood and holding the knife. A series of flashbacks reveal that every conversation Anna and Alex had was imaginary, Anna killed Matt because he knew what really happened on the night of the fire: Anna arrived home to find Rachel and her father having sex. Disgusted, she went to the boathouse to fill a watering can with gasoline so she could burn down the house. She did not shut off the faucet all the way, and when Alex arrived she knocked over a lantern. The boathouse exploded, killing Alex and her mother. Anna was arrested and institutionalized once again. It is revealed that the other mental hospital inmate, Mildred Kemp, was the nanny who killed the children, which is where Anna got the idea. The psychiatrist comes by to see Anna, and she tells him "I finished what I started," meaning to return home and kill Rachel. Standing in her room with pearls in her hand Mildred Kemp says "welcome home" to Anna who smiles back at her and the movie ends
