Are you selfish?

Many times in my life people that are (or were in most cases) close to me called me selfish. What is this all about?
A long year friend said to me yesterday that I'm selfish because I refuse to act the way as he wants me to act.

You know that feeling when you have to do something that you don't want, but you kinda have to do it because if you don't do it might hurt other person's feelings and they expect you to do it no matter what?

Well I don't care that much if I hurt other person's feelings, although I realize it after some time and I feel guilty a bit.
Anyway, I know that I'm a good person and a good friend but people can't realize that I find it so fake and so full of hypocrisy to do something against my will because society, friend, relative or girl expects me to do.
If I don't do it, that doesn't mean that I don't care about the person or that I don't love the person because I think that caring is shown on some other way, rather than sacrificing yourself for good of the others.
If I feel the need to sacrifice something for somebody sometimes I'll probably do it, like a errand of some kind, but I'm not gonna give everything for somebody, even if that person is close to me just because I'm supposed to do it and somebody expects me to do it.


I consider myself rational and a person with character, but people see this as selfishness.
So am I selfish? Do you have similar problems and are you selfish in this or in some other way?
