well basically purpose of both is to generate revenue with you website, blog etc....
in adsense you show ads on your website and if someone clicks you get money
in adwords your pay google to show your ad in google search and on other websites that uses adsense. when somebody come to your site through these channels you sell them goods and generate revenue.
