How important is domain to a tester

Hi,

I would like to know how important is domain to a tester.
Say if a tester worked on a particular domain "A" for 3 years and then
he/she changes the domain to "B".
What would be the impact on the career?

The pros and cons of changing the domain in career for a tester with the
following experience range.

1-3 years of experience
4-6 years of experience
7+ years of experience

Some thoughts are,
Since the person is new to the domain "B", it takes some time to get
comfortable.
Might not have the growth that a tester would have if he/she stays in the
domain he/she was working.
Advantage could be like, he/she can add more to his/her skill set

Thanks & Regards,
Amit

How important is domain to a tester

According to me domain knowledge is important to tester.but at the same time we need to improve our skill set at the same time.

if we are changing domain it will impact to us but it doesn't mean that we need to stick to same domain if we are changing domain it will take time to learn all the the things which are related to that domain but it will take some time but not so long

Accoring to me we need to improve our domain knowedge as well as we need to improve our skill set

correct me if anything is wrong

How important is domain to a tester

In some cases, I have seen where it is simpler to teach a person the testing skills than to bring them up to speed on the domain. I probably depends a lot on the individual and how computer savvy they are to begin with. However for me the second most important ability for a tester (after domain knowledge) is their ability to diagnose/troublesho ot/investigate…whatever you want to call it. They need to have curious mind that wants to figure out why it works the way it does and what kinds of tests will reveal that behavior.

How important is domain to a tester

I tend to look at it the other way around.

The #1 skill for a tester is the ability to diagnose and troubleshoot issues, if they can do that well then they can use that same inquisitiveness to learn the specifics of the domain quickly. On the other hand, no amount of coaching is going to teach a domain expert with no troubleshooting abilities how to be a good tester.

In my own career I have worked in no less than 7 different job fields, In each of those fields I have worked within multiple "domains" (or whatever the eqivalent concept is to the field) and it has always been easier to move to a different "domain" within a job field than it has been to cross job fields. Testing is Testing, it doesn't much matter whether you are testing a Web App, A Client Server App, An Embedded System, or a 50 year old COBOL app, it could be used in the Insurance Industry, or Banking, or digital entertainment etc. each of those technologies and domains will have subtle differences in how they are tested and what is important to a tester working on/in them but those differences are tiny compared to the differences between the job of a Business Analyst or Developer or Business End User and that of a Tester.

In essence, if you can test well, you can test anything and pick up the nuances of the domain as you go along.
